Oahu Web Design, Development, and Wordpress

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world. The popularity of WordPress represented by search trends is reflected in the usage rates of the CMS, with WordPress being used nearly ten times as much as its closest competitor, Joomla. The ability to add themes and plugins without having to program new features into your site is what makes Wordpress so awesome. Need SEO optimization? Throw in the SEO plugin! Site speed starting to bog down? Throw in the speed plugin! The cache plugin! A couple of extra speed plugins thrown in for good measure and your site speed should soar, right? Unfortunately, themes and plugins can cause your site to slow down. For every plugin you have in your site, there’s more code, more database queries and more work for your server to do. Plugins often do not work well together due to programming conflicts. They also each tend to come with their own separate CSS and Javascript files, resulting in more conflict and redundancy.

Aside from the work of several top of the line developers and agencies, the majority of the themes and plugins for WordPress has substandard code. The result is frequent functional issues that result in website sluggishness or downtime. Another very frightening issue is the intentional and unintentional security problems that stem directly from faulty themes and plugins. Bloated code is also a problem. The WYSIWYG editor produces bad HTML, most themes and plug-ins are bloated. You need to install HTML/CSS/JS minifiers. But don’t get the wrong ones or they’ll kill your CPU by modifying every request!

Did you know that a vanilla WordPress homepage with just one post compiles down to billions of raw CPU instructions? It’s an awesomely extensible, infinitely flexible, hookable, pluggable, page-slinging genius machine. But it’s also relatively slow (in computing terms) compared to simpler subsystems that focus on doing one thing with maximum efficiency.

At the end of the day, every single time WordPress executes, it needs to query the database. And if that database isn’t responsive and performant, every page load for that site will suffer. Moreover, the rate at which database performance can degrade—e.g. due to a “query of death”—can be sudden and deadly, just as the name suggests.

If you have serious performance problems due to a ramshackle site—bad queries, blocking http calls, etc.—you may be able to get some quick wins by throwing hardware at the problem, or by adding some clever caching. However, those types of solutions typically don’t hold up over time, especially if your site’s traffic or content footprint continue to grow.

If performance is important for you, you have to understand where your bottlenecks are, and how hardware or caching are going to help alleviate and prevent these issues. While big wins exist, there are no quick fixes.
